» Avalanche Skills Training 1

» Strong rider skills, proficient on your sled

» It is recommended to spend one season in the backcountry following your AST 1 before doing your AST 1

Required equipment

» Clothing appropriate for sledding and standing in cold/snowy weather

» Helmet

» Small personal first aid kit (sunscreen, lip-balm, moleskin, Band-Aids, medication, etc.)

» Transceiver – 3 antenna

» Probe – 3 meter

» Shovel

» Pack (large enough for all equipment on day tours)

» Mechanically sound sled

» Spare belt

» Tools & toe rope

Will receive these items in the classroom:

» Avaluator

» Decision making field book

» Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain

Map, compass, snow saw, snow study kit would all be beneficial but are not necessary

Course outline:

Day 1:

8:00 am – 4:00 pm
Classroom session.

Currently working on a blended delivery involving custom online course & a socially distant in class session. Details coming soon!

Day 2:

8:00 am – 4:00 pm
Companion rescue refresher & advanced skills
Location: backcountry

Day 3:

8:00 am – 4:00 pm
Decision making, terrain verification, stability tests while traveling ect
Location: backcountry

Day 4:

8:00 am – 4:00 pm
Planned & lead by the class
Location: backcountry

Can split the course into two weekends!

Refund policy

If cancelled within 14 days of the booking date you will not receive a refund unless your spot can be filled.

If cancelled before the 14 day mark you will be charged a $35 processing fee and receive a full refund minus $35 (not applicable to online courses).

Please note that if the minimum number of people to run a course is not met the course will be cancelled and you will receive a full refund.

Covid policy

If you are sick & can not make it to your scheduled course you will receive a credit to use at a later date with Stay Wild Backcountry Skills. We will work together with you to find a date that works when you are feeling better.

Please do not show up to a course if you are feeling sick or have been exposed to anyone with Covid 19 in the previous 2 weeks to your course. Our instructors can send home students if they show up ill & we will work together with them to reschedule a date.

Physical distancing will be maintained during courses & camps. If physical distancing can not be maintained (ie gondola) students will be required to wear a face covering (buff / face mask).

Please respect physical distancing and Covid regulations during our courses / camps.
